I love, love, LOVE this design! There are a lot of people who haven’t got smoke detectors in their homes because these devices are so ugly. The Chick-a-Dee is anything but ugly! This smoke detector, designed by Louise van der Veld, is disguised as an adorable bird that starts squeaking when sensing smoke. Louise is the winner of the design competition “Mooi uit de brand” (Dutch for “Rescued in style”), organised by the national association of insurers, that challenged industrial design students to design tools that improve fire safety at home.
Isn’t the bird adorable? And it can save your life too! The Chick-a-Dee will be in shops next year.

I love the concept of this smoke dector. Ugly smoke dectors have been one of my pet peeves as an Interior Designer. I went to their web-site and could not find the English version.
Do you know if they have one and where the product might be available in North America.
Thanks
Patricia

mooi uit de brand translates to beauty out of the fire, not rescued in style.

Hi Patricia, I believe that the chick-a-dee will be in stores next year (it is not in production yet). For more information it is best to send an email to the organisation of the design contest: info@mooiuitdebrand.nl
